  1. Disk No: 1957
  2. Disk Title: VMS40
  3. PC-SIG Version: S1.11
  4.
  5. Program Title: VMS40
  6. Author Version: 1.1A
  7. Author Registration: $25.00
  8. Special Requirements: None.
  9.
  10. This is a device driver that turns either a hard disk or a floppy disk
  11. into LIM4 expanded memory.  It is a software emulation of the 28
  12. function standard set forth in the Lotus/Intel/Microsoft Expanded Memory
  13. Standard (LIM/EMS) version 4.0.  All of the EMS 4.0 functions that can
  14. be implemented through software are provided by VMS40, with the
  15. exception of the DMA functions included in the Alternate Map Register
  16. Set function (function 28).
  17.
  18. The program is backwards compatible with software written for the
  19. earlier LIM 3.2 standard (courtesy of Lotus, Intel & Microsoft).  It
  20. lets you specify which drive to use for expanded memory, and how much
  21. disk to reserve.
  22.
  23. The trial version VMS40.240 restricts you to reserving no more than 240K
  24. for LIM memory, while the registered version VMS40.SYS allows you to
  25. reserve up to 32 megabytes.
  26.
  27. Naturally, using a disk to simulate LIM memory is somewhat slower than
  28. having the appropriate hardware implementation, but it is also a lot
  29. cheaper!  If you need to run big spreadsheets, or use Borland's
  30. standalone debugger to debug a really large program, and you cannot
  31. afford 2 megabytes of LIM memory, then VMS40 is your answer.
